Big Reds at Keens (Keens Steakhouse, 72 W. 36th Street, NYC): First of 4 bottles, it was opened, but not decanted for over 45 minutes before pouring. One of those cases where I liked the wine, but was slightly disappointed. Dunnuck gave it 99 points and I was expecting to be wowed. I wasn't. Part of the issue may be that I like newer world wines. Despite being very young, I do think it is at the beginning of its drinking window. I should note that my dinning partners loved this.
This might be one of the most complete, balanced, and breath-taking Chavaroche that I've had, going back to the 2005 vintage. Rich, intense, and brooding as you might expect, but also giving, open, and highly enjoyable. Extraordinary!
Had this at dinner and didn’t take contemporaneous notes, but I found this a bit tighter and more reserved than the 19 journaries. Decanted at the table and enjoyed over 2-3 hours and it didn’t budge much. Nose was a bit reserved but very elegant with violets, white flowers, and a floral vanilla like note. The palate was very mineral driven, crushed stone, the fruit was present but muted and didn’t have a clearly perceptible dominant color, a hint more of an earthy bacon element compared to the more floral journaries. My notes make it sound shut down but this was very enjoyable and elegant, and although I rated the journaries higher I think this one has more depth and potential for improvement with age.
(Ampuis) Goutait très (très) mal... Un nez affreux et rustique, vernis et réduit, animal et poussiéreux, j'etais choqué! J'avais souvenir de 2016 plus prometteurs...
