  • Very full bodied and teetering on too old. BUT if you like it that way, very good. Nice acid and some fruit hanging on. Fairly oxidative and viscous. Lower effervescence but very small bubbles. Drink up.

  • Dinner with Friends (Giant, Chicago): Courtesy of M to start the evening. Relatively deep color with a short mousse and fine, if not persistent, bubbles- definitely showing a bit of age in all appearances. Performs more like a very fine still wine than sparkler, which doesn't bother me in the least bit. Apple and orchard fruit notes with a soft nutty undertone and also honeysuckle and floral qualities. Very pretty and elegant. Apple on the palate with a caramel/nutty edge and a lingering finish. A May 2006 disgorgement. For my palate this was a perfect example of a mature Champagne at peak. 93+ pts.

  • FWS Champagne class (La Caille): Full bodied Champagne. Slightly metallic on opening, once it opens up has some nice floral notes with good acidity to hold it. Notes of biscuit and noticeable long sur lie aging. This was my favorite of the night when it came to the Champagne.

  • This was a full bodied pinot noir/champagne (50/50) champagne from a master of chardonnay. I found this champagne a bit heavy. This is a good champagne, but I wanted a bit more sleekness, and and more of an expression of minerality. I did not dislike it, but I will stick to the chardonnay champagnes.

  • This bottle was much more mature than the last one I had, which was maybe 2 years ago. Deep straw, almost gold colored. The aromas are very nutty at this point, with some breadiness but not much yeast. The palate is, unsurprisingly, less coiled up than it once was. In fact, I found it very giving of its spiced apple flavors, even as it's still fresh and focused. Delightful with every sip.
