Community Tasting Notes (7) Avg Score: 88.2 points

  • Consumed over 1 1/2 hours. Still very much alive, medium-bodied and with off-dry sweetness just fading a little. Fairly typical gewurztraminer spiciness, coupled with fruit notes reminding me of honeydew, apple juice, and maybe some mandarin orange. Bitter citrus seed/pith notes come through on the finish, detracting just slightly, but this was still quite enjoyable. 88-89.

  • Good. Balanced. Well worth the $15, though the price later went up to $20 per bottle, even at Costco. (83.5).

  • Rich and buttery for a Gewürztraminer. Delish! I like it. I will buy it again, willingly. Aromatic and slightly sweet, indeed but only off-dry. Very good (86.5).

  • Pale gold in color. Powerful nose of asphalt, peach and jasmine. Tastes of honeysuckle and canned mandarin orange, with a little pepperiness (like radish or mustard greens). Opulently fullbodied, with a weighty, long finish. Too sweet and rich with miso-glazed pork chops. Would have been better enjoyed on its own as dessert.

  • I'm realizing I'm not a big fan of 14-15% alcohol gewurztraminers. I know that traditionally they are intended to stand up to heavy meals like Alsatian choucroute, but I think I'd rather have beer with my sauerkraut and drink a gewurz at 10-12% alcohol with lighter fare. The higher alcohol cuvees usually have some sort of balance problems and do not do justice to the grape's wonderful natural flavors. For this particular wine, both the acid and the alcohol stick out a bit. Perhaps they will integrate over time, but I can't see it becoming an outstanding wine. This wine is probably fine for those who enjoy the high-octane style--the typical flavors of spice and pineapple/lychee are there.
