  • Short decant. Very expressive nose, didn't smell or taste like a Gevrey. Medium body, complex and multi-dimensional. Nothing green about this at all. Overall, a wonderful wine, it's aged very well with nice secondary aromas and flavors emerging. Phenomenal when I consider the price -- $100, and off a restaurant wine list!! Sorry, but I can't reveal where. I can tell you it's in Los Angeles though.

  • PNP. Cloudy red. Initial nose very funky but this blew off after 10 min. to reveal a fragrant nose of damp forest floor, kumquats and orange skin. On the palate medium weight, rustic, red berries with a very savoury finish. The wood is well integrated. Decent finish but not particularly long. Drinking very well.

  • Brettanomyces this evening. I am taking the time to write this note as so many of the 2004 Tremblay wines I have opened over the years have either been tainted by brett or TCA or had bad corks. When I say bad corks, I mean corks that split during the process of removal. Something pretty wrong was going on a la chez Tremblay in 2004. These bottles came from a reliable source and have been properly stored to boot. Hey, I have had some decent bottles, but over the last 4-5 years, I have experienced a disproportionate number of undrinkable Tremblay juice.

  • Red-purple cloudy/murky in the glass -- clearly unfiltered. The nose is more than funk -- this is one of the most reduced burgs I have ever had (I've tasted about 6-8 bottles of this wine, and they have all showed the same in regards to the reduction). On the palate comes gamey, rustic, untamed red and black stone fruit flavors. There is also a bunch of wood on the finish that has not integrated well. While the reduction does not obscure the taste of this wine to the extent that it overwhelms the nose, it certainly detracts from what should be a grand cru experience (despite decanting that I rarely do). I have been waiting for this reduction to dissipate over time as I have opened bottles, but it appears that it is here for the long haul. If you like your burgs on the delicate and feminine side (which Chapelle is not even without the reduction here), this burg is not for you.

Addendum: sadly I had to resort to the penny trick. It helped to a certain degree.

  • A very tasty bottle of wine. Well-balanced overall. A bit of funk in the nose. On the palate, lots of red fruit, chewy tannins, nice bite and a smooth finish. Perhaps a bit too much oak, but it rounds out the flavor.
