What does it say when you go down to your cellar and find things that you not only don't recall buying but have no idea who the producer even is? To paraphrase the famous Harry Waugh, not since lunch I guess.
Such was the case with this discovery. I had to look up A & C Parent (that's how it's labeled), where I learned it's a very old domaine in Pommard now in control of the able Anne Parent (that's the "A" part.) Farming has been organic and fully Demeter certified biodynamic in 2020. An ancestor was Thomas Jefferson's wine advisor, according to Jasper Morris. They own .39 HA in Ladoix in addition to better known holdings in nearby Corton and of course Pommard.
This wine has a swoon-worthy dark red-fruited nose, with prominent deep black cherry and earth notes. It's premium cru in weight and texture on the palate, conveying a sort of rock-like structure and depth that surprised me, although that may just be my lack of familiarity with Ladoix. Fruit is terrific on the palate culminating in a positive if slightly rustic finish with perhaps a touch of warmth.
I would not have been one bit surprised to learn this was from Corton itself or even Nuits-Saint-Georges. Lucky for me I have two more bottles and next time I'll know what the heck I've got in my hand. I found it very rewarding now but there's a decade of upside easy.
