  SO lovely with many layers. Starts soft and round and then gets you to sweet rasberries. What a discovery.

  The Clos du Roi Grand Cru site is very close to the Corton Charlemagne. It is far up the hill, steep and characterized by clay and calcareous marl with a little sand in the topsoil. The grapes ripen slowly and late, but the soil has very good drainage, so there is no waterlogging even in the late stages of ripening. The estate covers 0.38 hectares. Planted in 1961 and 1985, the Pinot noir was fermented spontaneously in wood cuve with 100% whole grapes, then gravity fed into barriques and tonneaux with a small amount of new wood. This was followed by about 14 months of aging without further agitation. Bottling was mostly straight from the barrel with minimal sulfur.
  
  The 2019 Corton-Clos-du-Roi is a Corton in the making, combining floral scents with a remarkable spiciness. On the nose, it evokes fresh and candied rose petals and blue flowers. Behind that are warm raspberries, some cherries, some underbrush and hints of black tea, clove, ripe raisins and a slightly petrol reductive note.
  
  On the palate, the Grand Cru seems surprisingly open and utterly charming at first, with a lovely melt. In addition, it is juicy and fleshy with a ripe dark fruit. Black currants, blueberries, a bit of bell bell pepper, licorice and olive can be tasted here. There are also notes of ripe raisins, a supple tannin and precise acidity. Towards the finish, the wine becomes more punchy, spicy, tart, demanding, powerful and also expressive. This is a wine with a wonderful texture, a deep, still undeveloped minerality and a character that can be clearly seen now, but which still needs to mature.
