Tasting my way through the rare 3-bottle 2-year vertical! I've been super ambivalent about the '21 Parabola given its inconsistency, and this bottle is no different. The nose is an absolute wood bomb, even as not much of the specific barrel notes seem to shine. The flavor meanwhile carries a lot of dark roast and barrel wood, but I feel like a lot of the whiskey and especially rye character gets a little too muddled and lost as a result. Good, but could have been great.

It's been almost 6 months since my last Parabola, and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised with how it has aged, particularly in light of how underwhelmed I was before! The nose is still rich and woody, with maybe a hint of licorice too, but the flavor is more rounded and mature, with the dark roast complimenting some of the peppery hints from the rye barrel in particular. Maybe I was having an off day or an off bottle before, but I'm excited to see where this goes next!

The use of different barrels this year is nice. Bitter chocolate, sweetness from the bourbon and that great rye bite on the back end. I really don't know if anyone else knows how to blend as consistently as Firestone Walker does.

Finally found the 2021 vintage earlier today, so I figured I'd see how it compares to my last bottle of the 2020 version. The biggest initial difference is that the nose is a bit bland, with only real perceptible aroma being a tiny hint of wood. The sip has the classic woody flavor I've come to expect, but while the finish is roasty and chocolatey, I'm surprised that none of the three barrels makes much of a distinct impression.
