  • Expensive to be sure, for a beer, but really truly a standout - it's just so damn powerful and explosive, like jamming your head into a bowl of melted black licorice, bourbon, baked plum, coconut, and (yes) some well-made stout beer, and just huffing it all in. Even after seven years, the aromas soar from the glass and bloom endlessly on the palate. I've only had one example that comes close in terms of sheer power, a Vanilla Bean Dark Lord, although this was still even more expressive. I might prefer Founders CBS for the much lower price (nowadays) and more elegant balance combined with the power, but there's no denying that this is in a league of its own.

It honestly feels even richer than I imagined, and even for this longtime barrel-aged stout lover, I felt a small glass went a LONG way- even though it still carries some semblance of the base beer, which is great, I would think twice if you ever plan to open one on your own. It's not just boozy, but extremely sticky, rich and decadent. I got this for just over $30, I think a great deal, although I've seen it being sold for closer to $50 and for that price I'd probably get a few bottles of slightly lesser barrel-aged stout instead.

  • Blackout Tuesday! (5/20) — Taking a step back forward from the previous vintage, the 2013 generally struck a really nice balance between the ‘11 and ‘12. A bit more heat than the '11 but still with reasonable balance, and nice chocolate and fudgy notes at the forefront, though not with as much intensity as the '11. If nothing else, this reinforced what an anomaly the '12 felt like thus far in the share.

  • Damn, age did wonders to this. Smooth, velvety, and full of mocha goodness.
