  • Very interesting wine. Spontaneous fermentation in open vats, no filtering, aged two years before bottling. Intense purple color. Big and tangy nose of pomegranate and black currant, with background notes of rubber, orange peel and black pepper. Some tannins indicate it should reward cellaring, at least ten years maybe more.

  • A large part of the Blaufränkisch grapes for the Moric Reserve comes from Lutzmannsburg, the rest is spread over the northern Burgenland communities of Zagersdorf and Sankt Georgen. It is the continuation of Blaufränkisch with selections in the vineyards and their specific characteristics in terms of age (27 to 80 year old vines), location and soil. Only the best barrels from these vineyards find their way into the reserve. Majority of the grapes are grown on calcareous sediments - from sandy to extremely clayey consistencies to shell limestone and chalk soils - of the Pannonian Sea. Fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 21 to 28 days in open vats. This was followed by 24 months of aging in 500- to 2,000-liter barrels. Bottling was done without fining or filtration with small amounts of sulfites.

    Intense purple to violet

The 2018 Moric Reserve was in barrel for a long time, but that does not show in the aroma. Wood is not found here, ripeness tones likewise. Rather, a whole basket of juicy and also sour cherries shows up, with cranberries, pomegranates, blood oranges and cranberries mixed in, as well as some dark notes of sloes, olives and a bit of dough from dark French farmhouse bread. Coolness returns with the crushed stone and some herbs found here as well.

If you want, you can drink this still very young reserve right now. Actually, you should be able to drink all of Roland Velich's wines at pretty much any time. That is one of the many characteristics of Moric wines. To do this, you ideally carry the wine into a decanter and then into a large glass, where it quickly becomes apparent that the Reserve goes further into depth compared to the Blaufränkisch, but still brings so much juiciness and acidity that you can and would want to drink this wine, too, without thinking much about it. It does, however, show more tannin and grip, and also more spice, somewhat reminiscent of fermented pepper and black cardamom, and including a few leaves of dark tobacco. The key here is the interplay of the ripe but the still The tannin, lively acidity and fruit that eschews sweetness entirely make this a very serious reserve wine.

  • Red berries and fruit in the begining. Strong herbal notes in the middle and end. Could be really great, but too sour for my personal taste.

  • My first Blaufränkisch since years and did not regret to buy that bottle.
Interestingly the bouquet strongly reminds me of Envinate's red wines from Ribeira Sacra. In a blind flight I would have guessed it.
This Blaufränkisch scores with immense freshness, coming from lively acidic backbone, herbs, fresh sour cherry, blackberry. Salty and with structure it leads to a long aftertaste. Really good red from Mr. Velich which should bring pleasure easily for another 10 years!
