Sandhi was founded by Master Sommelier Raj Parr and winemaker/former cook Sashi Moorman in 2011. The 2019 Sandhi is actually 83% from their other estate, Domaine de la Côte. The rest come from Patterson and Casa Cassara vineyards. This is one of the most westerly vineyards in the region, so it gets more influence from the ocean. Vines are very densely planted and farmed organically. The wine is fermented with native yeast in open-top concrete and wood vats. 30% whole cluster and aged in entirely neutral oak for 14 months. Earthy verging on mushroom, dirty Burgundy-like nose. The palate is more Santa Barbara in flavor with dark ripe berry fruit on the palate, but still in a more elegant, lower alcohol, old-world package. Medium acid. Some spice.

Ulveström's gunpowder note is spot on, along with complex blue fruit, mushroom, and damp decay on the nose. Medium+ acidity, very soft tannins. Serious and sensual palate with subdued fruit. Finishes long and unusual, packed with mineral and a bit of funky sauvage. Surprising, very good, and restrained. I'd disagree with strong new world characterization.

We liked it enough to open a second bottle on Thanksgiving. Solid pinot.

Reductive upon opening. Bad smell but ok taste. Double decanted and left for two days on the botle. Funky smell was gone and the wine was wonderful.
