Whoa, much better than I anticipated. A lovely, powerful, well-integrated Syrah with just a pinch of pepper on the aftertaste. And that's just the first glass after a PNP. I'm so glad I have two more bottles!

Very extracted and rich while maintaining solid acid and not making oak a huge factor (but it's there). This is kind of a composite score because my wife strongly disliked the high alcohol and found it to be food unfriendly. I can't disagree with that, but there's some good stuff going on.

I would not normally ascribe the word “beautiful” to a Syrah; “ big, blowsy, fruit forward” are the more normal adjectives. But this wine is all of that and more.
Wonderful ruby and deep purple colors portend something big. The aromas give off mineral, cedar and jammy notes - very correct for a good Syrah. As the evening goes on the nose opens up with more floral and plum notes as well.
But it is on the palate where “ beautiful” comes into play. Most syrahs are fruit forward, big and jammy wines. This Gibson Block Syrah is a symphony of fresh blackberry, black cherry, Valrhona dark chocolate, and herbs de Provence. There is subtlety and great refinement in this effort. The tannins are wonderfully integrated and yet still hint at more to come for those with the patience to lay this wine down.
I enjoyed this beauty with an applewood smoked prime rib, buttered red potatoes, and a fresh salad. The team at Marietta Cellars has made a beautiful wine to enjoy over the 5-10 years. Highly recommended.
