How odd that it has been seven years since the last review of this most curious and uncommon Rioja. First sip: Inky, powerful, modern, delicious, seemingly an obvious candidate for decanting. Could not have been more wrong. After decanting, faded fast, like no other wine I've encountered --- seemed to age a year every 15 minutes. Was the winemaker inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray? Recommendation: Should you open a bottle, drink up without delay.

2004 Spanish wines at the Magnum Society (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour a stainy black red. A bouquet of crème de cassis, ripe black raspberry, cigar box, some black spice. Some savoury aromas in the background. In the mouth, initially lovely sweet fruit, very ripe, but very primary. A Rioja with a heavy dry extract and very grippy, puckering tannins. Flavours of blackberry and blackcurrants, lean and muscular in the glass, a little unbalanced. Improved by the food on the night. It tasted black and tannic, showing a lot of oak, making me wonder if it will ever integrate. It finished a bit spikey on the back palate with a combination of the tannins and fierce intensity. It really needs serious time to settle, 10 years as a bare minimum. Of the 24 people at the tasting, this wine was no one's favourite. Two days later it seemed to have retreated further into its shell - perhaps it was shutting down? A ten year old wine tasting a bit like a Left Bank Bordeaux barrel tasting!
Dark in color with rich, concentrated aromas of raw steak, blueberries and a lovely floral component right near the end. Silky, fine tannins, round in the mouth and a lovely bright acidity. Festive flavors linger on my palate of blue and black berries, coffee and anise seed. 4/5

Inky wine with dark dark color. Oak is very apparent with vanilla being predominant. Dark fruit that is almost hidden behind the body. Fine but very big tannins, and an acidity to match. Minerals begin to come out in the nose as it opens. Rich flavors of red fruit. Big spice too, though not as apparent, needs about ten years in bottles. 4/5
