No ullage. Considerable sediment. Cork was pristine but short. Brilliant garnet color with paling almost bricking at the edges. Nose was restrained at first. Alcohol (14% listed) and later some leather, orange peel and dried red fruits. But subtle behind the alcohol. In the mouth, the flavors were OK. Again, restrained. The fruit was dried and it tended towards lean. Finished similarly. Medium length. Nothing flawed, just not inspiring. Had it alone for a glass or so and then tried it with with some delicious crusty, fresh bread, a new olive oil (to me), Olive Ranch Oroville Ranch Extra Virgin (Medium and fruity) laced with a touch of salt and balsamic vinegar. The wine paired well with this, but I preferred the Olive Oil and bread to the wine. Oh well. Points? Somewhere low 80's to my palate, not higher. I had this in May 2008 and my note then was, "Only OK". I didn't comment more, but I was clearly underwhelmed back then. I bought this because it was "organic" and because of Jon Rimmerman's prose. I'm paying much more attention now to how my palate tracks with his as it seems he prefers wines that are much more lean and restrained than do I. Show me fruit, complexity and pleasure. This one doesn't meet that standard to me.

OC Poker For Wine VIII: Grenache Blind (Wine Cellar Club, Irvine, CA): Served Blind. Seems aged but the color is still very bright. Lean yet juicy. I liked this but it seems like a wine to drink closer to release than not. Very slight spritz on the back end that goes away with swirling.

(Benedetti Vieux Clos) Rhone Dear Friends, This baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape turned many a head last year at the CVI and it is now coming into its own. Labeled as a mere “Cotes du Rhone”, so is Fonsalette... From 75% old-vine Grenache and the remainder Syrah, this certified organic wine is from the best parcels the winery owns just outside the confines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It is dusty, dynamic and exciting in the way a new gift enthralls on a holiday morning. Vinified in cement and barrel, the quality of the raw material is significant in that 2004 produced regal wines of slightly less alcohol than 2003 and 2005 (13.5-14.0 vs. 14.5-15.5). This places an emphasis on the feminine side of the grapes and it is more mineral rich and red fruit oriented than the the other two vintages - the freshness of the acidity is also fairly stunning. The result is a potent blend of earthen garrigue, spice and kirsch that will remind many of a cross between a baby Pegau and Clos du Caillou all for a great price. A top effort and VERY RARE. The reigning Gold Medal winner (CVI) for 2004 Cotes du Rhone, this wine is not easy to come by but we secured a small amount that will be here shortly. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - only 25 cases for the entire US. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY with perfect provenance directly from the winery cellar 2004 Domaine Benedetti Cotes du Rhone “Vieux Clos” (MDO/CVI) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone9120

This bottle was bigger, bit of alchohol, very young seeming. Better second night.
