Opened last night with plain pasta - a rather ascetic experience. The wine shower well on the nose - hints of baked spice, cinnamon cloves, wet rugby boots. Then on the palate it gave up its credentials - initial fruit on the palate subsided to a rather stalky green and vegetal finish. It reminded me of 2004 Vosne Romanee - slightly unripe. So a B- report for me

Colour is very deep garnet - for Pinot this is almost inky. However, there is a surprising amount of clear meniscus (even allowing for Pinto) when you tilt the glass and it looks a bit flat. What is going on?
The nose is exciting. Smoky, dark fruits, a hint of spice and cinnamon oak (it got 17 months in French oak - they don't say how much was new, or barrel size, but oak is a significant player here). There's a bit of alcohol burn.
The palate is where issues arise for me. It is a well made Pinot, make no mistake. The problem is that the wine is very much loaded up on the front end and then it falls away rapidly on the finish. There is pretty good intensity but I find the oak obtrusive. There are good aspects that include the dark fruits but the big question for me is whether the relatively short finish is going to be cured by age and whether the oak will come into balance.
I am agnostic on this wine. With lots of oak you roll the dice because over time, if your fruit isn't fantastic, the oak just dries the wine out and it never comes into balance. I don't have a history with this wine to make a call on it but that finish really troubles me, because in my experience wines where the finish falls off don't make up that issue over time. There's enough to like that I hesitate on this but...
My score reflects the CT scale and I rate it now as good. If the oak and the finish do good things over time then the score could move up a long way; but will they? There are safer bets out there.
Probably consumed too early. Lovely dark cherry and strawberry on taste, with light morning dew forest on the nose. Medium short finish with minerals on backend. Could benefit from time to concentrate

red plum fruits on nose, with darker fruits on palate. vg and well balanced. Developed well over 48 hours open.
