With proper storage, this was beautiful and absolutely not over the hill. Classic aged Zinfandel aromas leapt out of the glass immediately after opening, and the wine improved from there. Brick-red with hints of brown around the edges. Lots of pepper and spice on the nose and palate with some raspberry aromas remaining. This wine lacks terroir, of course, but it was expertly made and has aged exceptionally well.

Very surprised -- last bottle of this vintage in the cellar, and the previous one I opened was way over the hill. Somehow, this last one held onto its magic. Decanted for 30 minutes, it still has strong fruit, decent structure, and a reasonable Zin finish, lovely and quite drinkable. Okay, maybe I overrated a bit, more like an 88-89, but it gets 2-3 bonus points for surprising me by holding on, when I thought it was surely a lost cause -- proof positive of bottle variation!

(Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel) #3; COLOR-dark; NOSE-laundry detergent component; really nice black cherry fruit; clove action; TASTE-solid; this is Cherry City, USA; the cherry flavor is intense, short & tight (like a Now & Later candy); good roundness; it drops off on the finish, but a very solid wine; drink it now; GV-87
