Seghesio's 2022 Sonoma County Zinfandel was sourced from numerous vineyards throughout the AVA (55% estate grown, 45% purchased from long-standing grower relationships). What resulted were more than 150 grape lots that were individually fermented and later blended. Because some of the fruit came from field blends, the wine contains 6% unidentified "mixed reds," with the balance being comprised of 88% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah and 1% Alicante Bouschet. Each lot was aged for 10 months in 7% new American oak and 93% neutral French and American oak barrels before being blended and bottled. Sampled over a three-hour interval from a bottle that had been popped and poured, it sports a dark ruby robe and offers aromas of blackberry and boysenberry fruit that are accented with notes of pickling spice, black pepper, lavender, eucalyptus and cocoa. Medium-to-full-bodied, fresh and proportionately oaked, it delivers flavors in line with the aromas, staying solid on the mid-palate. The tannins are medium in weight and fine-grained in texture, while the lofty 15.0% alcohol stays in check (at the appropriate serving temperature of 60-65°F). Medium-to-long and smooth on the finish, this is an enjoyable Zin that should be at its best over the next 4-5 years. If you choose to pop the cork at this stage, give it an hour or more of air. Drink now-2029.

Drank over two nights. It was best, even pleasant, at the end of the second night. It seemed a little musty. I could not pair it with food. In all my years of drinking this wine, my only somewhat negative experience.

Pleasant nose, but don’t confuse this with the “Old Vine” version that WS scored 93. This is not that!

A very brambly style. Not a juicy fruit style.
Color. Dark saturated purple.
Nose. Brambles, make up, cinnamon, clove, green bell pepper.
Palate. Cherries, cocoa, currants, spicy acidity. The acidity is balanced by a lower fruit quality.

Easy drinking and just enought complexity to make it interesting. Drink now +2 years. No significant upside.
I drank a glass. Drank over 2 nights.
