  • Dark red, fading a bit at the rim. Nose picks up some dark fruit, but has evolved more towards an earthy/mushroom/mineral profile. Still lively and fresh on the palate, with dark fruit and more mushrooms. Not sure this will improve with further age, but it still paired well with Copper River sockeye and a tarragon mustard butter.

  • Full nose of earth, blackberry, nail polish, mushroom, and a touch of eucalytpus. Full bodied and plush on entry, with excellent remaining structure and long finish. Started out nice, but became less enjoyable with air time. Have had 3 bottles of this over the past year, each quite different. This one really wasn't fully enjoyable, though certainly didn't seem over the hill.

  • Fascinating experience. Sweet, rich dried fruits, wet earth, mushroom, black tea, cigar spices, anise and violet. Very plush and full palate on entry, pushing through to a 20 plus second finish of plush tannins and spice that swell to a long crescendo.

I tried a bottle of this about 14 months ago. It was primary and grapey. I looked up some tasting notes, and saw one from the venerable Jim Cowan, who was similarly unimpressed. I put these wine in a box with some others that I planned on giving away, to someone with a less demanding palate. The experience almost made me reconsider buying these wines.

Since then, I have tried several other of my Belle Pentes', including the 2002 Murto, that, based on tasting notes, are apparently emerging from deep slumber. These wines truly shut down, and are a thrill when they come around.

An eye-opening experience, and an outstanding wine.
