Brett's Epic Birthday Tasting (Palena - Washington, DC): the first wine of the night was one i had earlier this year and loved. i loved it even more this time. the aromatics are enchanting: almond shell, lemon zest, sea air. it's so fresh, but shows some of those more intriguing aromas of aged champagne. the acid on the palate is ripping, but it's balanced by superb yeastiness. bright lemons, granny smith apples, lemon-lime, and a bit of a nuttiness as well. the finish is gorgeous.

Good time for this right now. Bead is still going strong although I wouldn't call it vigorous. Extremely well balanced and harmonious at this stage in the game. Safe to say that there is still some left in the tank. Delicious.

D.C. Contingent's Weygandt Wine Tasting (Washington, D.C.): this is my style of champagne for sure. flowers, lemon zest, almonds and slate on the nose. this is medium bodied with really spicy acidity that hits right away and stays on through the finish. i love the freshness, but also the depth of pineapple, lemon, custard and hazelnut flavors. i imagine this would improve with another ten years. i'd love to see those nutty, toasty flavors evolve.

Good sparkling. Nose of toast, minerality, citrus. On the palate there was more citrus, apple core, toast and minerality. Above average finish.
