Well stored since purchase. Soon after opening: deep colour, spicy fragrance, tannin and acidity, dark fruits (dark cherry) but really rather austere at first, even for a traditional Gran Reserva. Given time in the glass and, importantly, with food, it began to soften and open but it was still not what we expected. After 24h, it was softer and rather better balanced, although the fruit was mainly dark damson/damson skin. Savoury flavours overwhelmed any ‘sweetness’ on the palate. It was quite good with rare fillet steak but, after the food, the wine showed more tannins and acidity than fruit. Frankly disappointing. Maybe it is still too young but I can’t see the fruit recovering. This was a difficult year because of frost but I find myself wondering if the choice of grapes for this vintage was more limited than usual. 88-

Really enjoyed and good QPR at $15 from Costco. For a Rioja/ Temperanilo, deep color and full body, but yet very smooth and easy to drink Was enjoyable upon opening and better balanced an hour later (was gone shortly after that).

I liked this a lot - red fruits, soft palate, good acidity, long finish with a bit of grip - but G thought it was “wet dog.”
