  • Bright yellow colour, light gold. In the nose ripe yellow fruit, yellow apples, citrus, peach and a hint of tropical fruit, honey, distinct minerality, slight petrol aromas and a hint of white flowers. The nose reveals a slightly developed Riesling, since it is less perfumed and explosive than many young versions, but the mature aromas don't dominate, so it is still "youngish".

Classically dry on the palate, again citrus (grapefruit) and mixed yellow fruits, good acidity, very pronounced minerality with mint-like notes, a hint of bitterness. It has quite good aroma concentration, but the taste is less fruit-dominated than the nose. The aftertaste is very minerally - long, crisp and fresh - and adds extra elegance to the wine and lifts the overall impression a little further.

With its dry palate and excellent minerality, the wine is a very classical high-end Alsace Riesling in style. "Classical" because it is fully dry although it comes from a Grand Cru vineyard. Although classical, it is by no means austere in style. This could be a vintage characteristic; 2005 produced rather ripe wines and when I bought it in 2008, I remember tasting one or two 2004s from the same producer which gave a leaner, more acid-dominated impression, although still elegant - wines that I guessed would need more time. The nose of this wine could almost go with a Vendange Tardive or an Auslese, giving it a slightly modern appearance within the classical frame.

This wine is fully approachable right now (at 6 years), but I don't think there is any hurry to drink it up. I'm sure it will drink equally well, if not better, at 10 years of age, and those who like fully mature Riesling will probably enjoy this wine at 15-20 years of age as well.
