Nicliani Portfolio tasting (Beef bar): The wine shows high intensity in the nose, very earthy, spicy, red fruit, a few olive paste notes, leafy, oaky layers, a touch balsamic. In the palate, the wine shows full body but not overpowering, some alcohol heat, earthy again, caramel, nutty, almond, dried red fruit, elegant for a such a wine, tight tannins, long finish

2 hr decant of this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot beauty. 2017 may have been a difficult CA vintage but not with Sloan’s Asterisk. It was lush & smooth with each pour maintaining a complete joy front to finish.

So this may not be the best vintage yet, but tasted after a 2018 Brand Proprietary Blend (which, I realize, is a CF-first blend vs. this Cab-first blend) which I found disappointing, this really hit the spot with straight-down-the-middle-of-the-fairway blend of red & black (but not much blue) fruit, a little cedar/spice, and a little cocoa. I saw in some other notes that people though it was a little light weight, but I found it fully mouth-coating yet with good acid to keep it from being even the slightest bit flabby. One of my two favorite "seconds" (the other being M. Etain).
All that said, I should add that there is a little bit of green bell pepper on both nose and finish that I don't think of as typical for Asterisk and which (for me) slightly detracts from the wine.

Had this wine before and it was good.
Decanted it for several hours and it was great!

hard to believe this is a 54% merlot red blend, very smooth, soft yet rich tannins
