Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. Single-vineyard Fiano from Lapio, a top quality subzone. Med yellow w/ a green hue. Med intensity green pear, white flowers, white peach, ripe lemon, lime, fresh herbs, tropical fruit, wet stone, & just a touch of toasty oak from 30% fermentation in new French oak barriques. Dry, but w/ ripe lemon notes. Med+ to high, vibrant acidity, med+ alcohol (13.5%). Med+ body, pronounced flavor intensity & length, w/ a creamy, mouthfeel thanks to 8 mos. of lees aging. Very elegant and well balanced, but a bit more restrained than prior vintages. Very youthful, it will benefit from some additional aging.

Light gold color. Light lemon aromas with a nice herbal note. Lights up on the palate with lemons, pears, minerals, hint of anise. Bit of melon on the mid-palate. Brilliant acidity, fabulous balance. Finishes long, long, crisp with lemon/lime notes. Fabulous wine. Should improve with 3 to 4 years of age and drink well for 10 to 12 years. With swordfish steaks.

A private dinner (Restaurant Ratanà, Milan, Italy): From a single vineyard in Lapio at 600 metres above sea level, 13.5% ABV, 33,700 bottles and 250 magnums produced. Intense, elegant, steely acidity, hint of reduction, white peach and pear fruit, aromatic green herbs, flowers, salty minerality, pure and precise, jewelly texture, excellent length. Superior Fiano.

I had the 2018 vintage of this on my last trip to Campania and it lives long in the memory as probably my favourite ever Italian white. Saw this in a supermarket this time, and couldn’t resist the opportunity to try the new vintage even though young. On opening a slight matchstick note, minerality, white flowers. On the palate, super lean, dry but balanced acidity and toeing a line with the fruit that is closest to white peach but not overly dominant of any fruit descriptor. With a little time in the glass it gains a bit more body. Drinks like a young premier cru Bourgogne- but with a persistent flinty minerality that also reminds me of a well made chablis or Sancerre. Top Fiano- well worth seeking out.
