  • Volodya’s Birthday with Vosne-Romanée (Tre Bicchieri, Moscow): 94/100

René Engel’s village level Vosne-Romanée from a blockbuster year doesn’t have the complexity of Les Brûlées 2000, but it’s a clean, juicy wine, full of berries, with neat balance but somewhat angular palate.

    Simplicity of pleasure.

  • Used to be my go to Village back then but price has gone up exponentially.... Drinking very well and perhaps a bit advanced compare to the previous bottle. The complexity is there but lack a bit of the tension to shine in this line up.

  • Served blind as well. This nosed of some age, with earth, sous bois, violets and red-cherries. Guesses largely centered on a early-mid '90s wine, or a '04; But all wrong - for an '02, this seemed to be a tad advanced in its aging curve... Some spice, leather, more earth on the palate intermixed with red-fruits and tinge of herbs. Very enjoyable, but I hope this isn't a representative bottle of the '02, else, time to drink-up...

  • Wife's birthday at Fat Cow. Bright red, vibrant and clean. Yet again, Engel has impressed me. Lovely nose of dark roses, violets, crushed blueberries, wild strawberries, wood spice and smoke. Despite this being a village (albeit from a 2002), this drank beautifully. It would not necessarily improve significantly, but considering the best glass came after 2 hours, with the wine putting on more complexity, spice and length, I'm convinced this still has a long life ahead. The palate was really wonderfully complex for a village - spice, leather, truffle, wild red and blue fruit, crushed rocks and smoke. I can't help but make a comparison to an Henri Jayer NSG village 2000 drunk a few years back. This was the better wine, and at a fraction of the price.
