  • Soldera vs Stella (Gemma): Popped at 12pm, slow ox in the bottle, drank about 830pm. Acetone, oak, sweet cherry, good acid but lacks the precision, drying tannins.

  • Friday Night at Dave's Place: This pours light ruby in the glass with ever so faint orange at the rim. The nose absolutely blasts rose petals, accented with touches of gravel, raspberry, cherry, toasted coriander seed, and a touch of VA. Very airy, elegant, floral, and appealing. The texture is well managed with the youthful brunello structure not too overpowering here. The wine enters on bright red fruit with medium plus tannin and medium plus acid. The finish has some bitterness but is balanced nicely against the red fruit and floral elements on which the finish lingers nicely. My first experience with this producer and it left a wonderfully positive impression.

  • Opened at Caprice in HK. Slow-oxed for a few hours before being slowly enjoyed over dinner.

This really needed some air, and perhaps it would have been a better decision to double-decant this as it just kept on improving. Felt slightly grumpy and sleepy at the start, but woke up slowly and started yielding a beautiful nose of red fruits. The palate was velvety smooth, and I was very intrigued by slight herbaceous hints of mint.

We compared this head-to-head against the Soldera 2016. Though this was not as outwardly sweet and seductive as the Soldera, this definitely has larger upside and will benefit from more age and more air. This is a big wine and when it fully unfurls it will be incredible. Looking forward to revisiting in 5+ years.

  • Beautiful light ruby. Rose, strawberry, spice.

  • I opened this because I had seen a post on IG where there was a concern about volatile acidity. I'm not getting that today, so not sure if this is just a case of bottle variation.

This is already open and enjoyable. My one word of caution here is that this is a big, ripe wine (14.5% alcohol per the label). In that regard, it reminds me of Stella's 2015 Brunello, which I tried back in March. So maybe this settles down with some additional time in the bottle, but right now it is featuring some in your face fruit. This is a single vineyard wine from the La Curva vineyard.
