  • This bottle showed stone fruit, with some acidity of grapefruit supporting it. Mandarin orange, apple and some light mineral, with a brisk/tight finish. This seems less open than the bottle I had last year....stoppered the bottle and it's held the CO2 well overnight. In getting to retaste this again, it's worthy of an update to my note. I missed the pear in the wine yesterday, it's quite present tonight. And what I can reinforce is that the 2016 really puts the fruit center--there is plenty of it washing through the palate, and the finish has relaxed more, with the wine less coiled in the finish. What succeeds here is that John has managed to get plenty of fruit concentration, alongside enough citrus and still mitigate (at least for me) any overt austerity from the Brut Nature approach. My bet is that this can age out longer, meld a bit more and still improve.

  • 4 years on lees, brut zero, smells slightly funky/cheesy on the nose. Tastes like lemon and a lot of minerality. Get a hint of green apple jolly rancher. Could use some more age to gain complexity. A bit one note with the citrus flavor.

  • hints of vanilla, pear and brioche on the nose. Lemon candy, lemon meringue pie, minerality, mostly just citrus through the finish. It’s fresh and light, nice on a warm summer night if not overly contemplative.

  • Champagne In My Backyard: Served blind. I continue to like this wine, having tasted it now on what I think is 4 different occasions, to include most of those in a blind setting, with the wine being mixed in to mostly a grower Champagne format. I enjoyed the wine again. Apple and citrus, with a bright, citrusy profile or tangerine and orange. The expression of low dosage (this is sans dose, in reality) was evident this time, too. Overall, holding its own again very well.

  • I like Wetrock comment that this wine is young. It's vibrant, full of energy, dominant lemon and lime citrus. This held up in a 20 bottle lineup of primarily grower champagnes.
