Medium dark reddish garnet in color with some clearing at the edges. Full, forward & aromatic nose of ripe fruit aromas of strawberries, blueberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of roses, orange rind & earthy/dusty notes, tar, anise, herbs, mint, minerals & a hint of balsamic notes in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of raspberries, mulberries & plums, spices, herbs & minerals. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well presently with decanting & airing but at 24 years of age it is close to or at its peak of development. It should hold here for a few more years although any further development would be minimal, if at all. Fill was in lower portion of neck; cork was stained 1/2 but intact.

The '99 Margheria is yet another great example of the modern style of Barolo creating a pleasurable experience in a cool and structured vintage. The nose displayed a wave of medicinal black cherry, menthol, pine resin, savory spices, black earth minerality and dried florals. On the palate, I found silky textures, offset by a stimulating mix of acids and minerality, with tart black cherry, hints of olive and savory herbs giving way to adolescent tannin. Black cherry, balsamic spices and hints of residual tannins lingered long, leaving a sense of maturity with just enough residual bite to provide interest.

I thought in rather good harmony right now. The new oak was still there and it was still rather fruit driven, but for all that delicious and easy to drink. Interesting to see because I believe this would have a 100% new barrique wine.

3 hours decant. Absolutely stunning. These have been in a dumb phase for some years. They are now shining. Medium dark, transparent and clear colour. No bricking. Classic Barolo nose of roses, tar, some iodine and loads of dark fruit underneath. Medium bodied. Very fresh. Tannins still there and cleansing the mouth. Very mature tannins and really giving the wine balance. Long succulent finish. One of the best Piras in years.
