  • Interesting to read the other notes for this wine which suggest a level of bottle variation.

At 16 years old, I am quite enjoying it despite the defects. Consumed over two nights.

Night one - primary fruit nose, lots of currants and hints of spice. No tannins on the palate but fine acidity makes it pleasant enough to sip over 2/3 hours. A little jammy.

Night two - it's open up after being left at warm room temperature for 20 hours. Plums, cherries, currants, leather and licorice on the nose. The palate has gained some weight and some light tannins and even more acidity to balance it out. Still jammy and the alcohol is more evident.

Overall I expected it to be over the hill, and certainly it is past its best, but drinkable nevertheless.

A general observation I am finding all of the Aussie wines I've tasted over the past 12-18 months from the 2001's to the 2005's are all high in alcohol and haven't aged particularly well. In contrast, many of the younger wines from 2013-2017 seem far better balanced, particularly the alcohol, and I am hopefull that they should age with more grace.

  • Long past it's prime if it ever had one. Faint nose, smooth tannins but much else left.

  • Very dissapointing. Muted vegetal flavors to the point of coming across swampy. Not very pleasant nose or flavor profile. Opened up a bit after an hour or so in the decanter but fruit never came forward. Judging from the other note and the slight brownish tint maybe the bottle was tainted a bit, but even after lots of air never showed me any proof of being ruined. Was really looking forward to trying this and did not enjoy it very much at all. A Silverado Napa Cab absolutely killed it in a vs. tasting (and that says something!).

  • I decanted at kickoff and it was ready by the end of the first quarter. This wine is just bloody I tell you. Deep, bloody crimson in color with strong aromas of ripe, spicey blackfruit. As it continued to open aromas of tar and a bit of earth emerged. Full nectar with chewy, velvety tannins. Mr. bold, concentratred darkfruit play's the part well while introducing Ms. mild acidity onto the stage. The scene unfolds with a complex array of guest stars. Blackcherry, cranberry, anise, and jammy currant rush the stage to reveal a brilliant cinnamon spice character that steals the show. Finishes like a classic, long and savory with much to ponder. This is a muscular, fruit forward wine. Highly recommended.
