Chardonnay Shootout (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Tasted blind in pre-2010 Chardonnay flight. A very peculiar wine that I had trouble deciding if I liked or hated. Ripe and almost sweet, this has too much RS to be really savory. But it has great concentration and great fruit with unctuous textures. This was the group's favorite of the flight, but I just couldn't fully agree. Very easy to identify as New World.
Light color. Coconut, banana and tropical fruit aromas give way to orchard fruit and green fig. Full-bodied and rich with tropical fruit, oak spice and vanilla flavors on the palate. On the young side and showing plenty of oak, though the fruit is there too- perhaps another year or two is warranted to allow more of the oak to soften/integrate.
opened about 1 hr: Still pale yellow; light lime creme brulee nose; flavors of brioche, lime creme, not multifaceted like a Corton but similar in mouth feel, weight on the palate; medium finish, crisp and following the brioche theme rather than citrus 2 bottles left will probably spread them over 5-8 yrs to see if any complexity develops, but not bad at all right now.
