  • Tasted out of the bottle with and without aeration. Aerated wins as usual. Light color but bright red cherry flavors initially. Over the next couple of hours the bright fruit disappears and becomes more earthy. Very good wine but finish is short. Can probably hold for a few more years. Didn't match very well with huevos rancheros for lunch today but still enjoyable. I don't usually write tasting notes but I don't want Bevetroppo to feel alone. Three more bottles left.

  • From memory, this was unexpectedly fine and very tasty. As Bevtroppo has noted, this is a very pleasant surprise.

  • I appear destined to be the only person on the planet to both buy and review this wine, which I can't help feel therefore makes it some kind of vinous Brigadoon, a special wine that only is known to me and with each sip evokes the sweet standard, "It's almost like being in love." Cheery and cherry color, haunting perfume of ripe cherries, strawberries and wet loamy earth, flavors of berries and the lightest of mineral sensations, with a lilting and gentle mouthfeel. As I search my paltry vocabulary to describe it, I would say if Volnay were a perfume, this would be its eau de toillete, yet it is beautiful and wholly rewarding in its own right. Who are these guys? One bottle left..sigh.

  • With gracious thanks to Bevetroppo for the gift of this special wine, I offer the following notes. What sets this wine apart from the very beginning is the unusual juxtaposition of color brightness -- precious gem caliber, ruby red color with a level of viscosity that leaves Salvador Dali-like legs endlessly dripping from the lip of the glass. Imagine a bright red, flawless translucent cherry slowly and softly melting before your eyes. Now imagine that same sensation inside your mouth. Without a smooth, friction-less glassy surface, the wine clings almost forever to the insides of your cheeks, forever bathing your tongue in its sweetness. Rejoice!

The balance, fullness and structure of this wine are about perfect. The finish stays almost forever, tempting you to purse your lips and prolong the finish. Forget the pranayama exercises or the attempts at Tantra. Swallow. Raise your glass. Open your mouth. Empty another glassful.

Just make sure you have another bottle on hand.

  • Well, it looks like I couldn't quite wait out the full 6 months I specified in my previous note. Enjoyed this to the last drop, but will state that the other bottle's light toast tonight had a faintly woody quality that I didn't love quite as much. Back on the 6 month regimen for you, Seigneur. What's so seductive about these '05's besides the ripe fruit is the balance and mouthfeel, which just leaves me not wanting to swallow the wine at all. Funny, but while I was drinking this, I was listening to John Prine, and he was singing "up on Bear Creek, the water tastes like cherry wine..." and wouldn't you know it, the unmistakable flavor of ripe cherries emerged from the glass...
