  • From a wine society mystery mature parcel. Supposedly well beyond its drinking window, this was delightful mature claret. Cedary spices on the nose, not a great deal of fruit, but lovely leathery tertiary notes. Delicious stuff.

  • From a magnum.
    Lovely colour: barely mature looking.
Plummy blackberry fruits on the nose, along with tar, leather and chocolate. Initially a bit closed, but opening up more and more with time and aeration.
Quite light and fresh on the attack, even a touch of juiciness. Fills nicely, but doesn't develop any real complexity. Some tannins, but all largely integrated.
Does the relatively simple feel matter? Well, no: it's good to have something really nicely drinkable but tasty and with enough character. I'm not sure what this cost back in 2006 (though it was in Bibendum's sale): I wouldn't want to pay massive amounts of money for it; but I'd be happy at under £30 a bottle. Though this may have been helped by being en magnum.
It's just a really good, classic, old fashioned claret.

  • It’s definitely an aged wine, but it’s aged surprisingly well. Still rather dark colored in the glass with no brickish color you expect with older wines. Pleasant nose of red fruit, some leather. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, plummy mouthfeel with red currant and cherry fruit, some baking spice, and mellow tannins. Pleasant on its own, but was really quite nice with the roasted chicken

  • Final bottle from a case bought about a decade ago. Solid cru Bourgeois claret. This went through a very awkward phase a few years ago when it was not enjoyable to drink. It is over that now but I am glad mine have now gone all the same. Muted matt red fruits a whiff of interesting cassis, decent food wine. Mature and ready but will go on for some years.

  • This was a real ugly duckling a few years ago and while not exactly turning into a swan it is now a creditable cru Bourgois showing a touch of austerity typical of the year. Matt red fruits nose, maturing but not fully mature. Good fruit, resolved tannins though still tastes young in that complexity is yet to come.
