  • Ok just for fun a tasting note on this wine, which I bought in an online auction in 2008 for 7,50€ from a lady who said it came from her deceased father’s cellar. No indication of the vintage (neck label missing), an e-mail to Chapoutier in an effort to date the bottle yielded no useful information (“pre-1970’s”). But after some research on the net I think I can now narrow the vintage options down to 1955-1959.
I put off opening this bottle for years, being convinced it was dead. And it was, almost. Cork crumbled on opening, orange brown colour, bouquet of dead leaves, a little soy sauce. I had the impression the wine regained a little life with air, which made it actually palatable; old, indeed too old, slightly maderized, acidic but fun and unexpectedly intriguing. I took my time and finished two glasses over two hours, by which time the wine had effectively died. After all it was good fun for 7,50 €’
