Most of the ratings before this were from 2009 or older. I picked up this wine in a close-out basket at a HyVee store in Mankato, Minnesota. Normally I do not buy a rosé older than two years. But for the price of $8.99, what the heck?
Indeed, this wine has lasted quite well. I'll give some credit to the screwcap enclosure, which has protected it from the everyday retailer's desire to display all wines neck up. I give the rest of the credit to the winemakers of Bonny Doon for choosing the right blend of Rhône-style grapes and processing them correctly.
While the wine has lost some of its acidity and freshness, it is still formidable enough to stand up to a basil-laden pasta primavera. Okay, so it's lightly sweet. Who cares? So are tomatoes and a host of other of the wonderful fresh vegetables that we crave and enjoy in mid-summer. In sum, it matched well to the pasta and indicated that yes, Virginia, rosés can be enjoyed at four years of age.
Salmon color. Nose: intense strawberry, some green apple, interesting and distinct note of yogurt, and a hint of tobacco. Unususal and attractive. Palate: again a kind of strawberry yogurt thing going on with some apple, a little kick of peppercorn, and a repetition of the tobacco-like quality. Lingering apple skin. Very consistent from the nose to the palate. Medium/lighter body. Solid foundation of acidity. Moderate length. I can't see what's not to like about this wine. Truly outstanding, versitile juice.
K&L Charity Event. Refreshing nose from the red wines tasted so far, veggies, wild berries, touch of smoke, more of the same on the palate, would be better if colder, medium body, cleans the palate, good complexity for a rose, medium finish.
Fresh, zesty and very French in character, with ripe strawberries, celery and dried roses on the nose that lead to flavors of the same, with a splash of white pepper on the finish. Delightfully dry, sufficiently acidic, and very refreshing.
