  • So I whole-heartedly disagree with other reviewers. This behaved like a classic 2005. Uninteresting and over-acidic at the beginning. Into the decanter - see you 2 hours later, absolutely in balance, and gained additional complexity and verve. Last glass was the best, continued to improve. This could get to 93-94 easily once in balance.

Burg 05, like 86 in Bordeaux in terms of acidic profile in their youth - it took decades for 86 Bordeaux to come into balance. 05 may need 10-20 years, given the way every 05 I've tasted needed copious amounts of air.

That being said, the definition and precision of the 05s after copious amounts of air do lend me to think the hype is warranted....

  • My last btl, I think? Nothing earth shattering but certainly a pleasant resolved btl of mature red Burgundy. Maybe lacking a bit of mid palate punch and depth. Had higher hopes for this given the producer, vintage and ex-chateau provenance.

  • Not as good as last time, but still good. It just lacked the focus that was present last time. Some sanguine elements and muddled fruit were the highlights. Served in less than ideal conditions (a very humid 87F with pizza outside).

  • Corked, unfortunately. Not as badly as some, but it smelled and tasted vaguely like dirt

  • This wine is not yet ready. Wait for at least 2023 before drinking this 2005 beaune. The 2001, 1999 and 1993 Gaunoux Beaune are all drinking well now but there is still unresolved tannis on the finish and after a two hour decant the wine has still not come together with much of the fruit being covered by the acidity on the finish is still very much present. My bottle has been stored properly since release.

I like the quality and style of this producer but my impression is this Beaune will peak at 2025+. Drink older vintages first and enjoy this in the next decade and beyond. The acidity still takes center stage at least on my bottle and this is not as dense or full-bodied as the 1999 version. I was expecting more extraction and depth in the middle but right now it has lighter structure and not typical to a 2005 Red Burgundy. Tastes like a cross between 2001, 2008 and 2010 at this stage with a strong acid spine.
