  • My favorite wine from a 20 vintage (1989-2008), two day vertical tasting of Chris Ringland's glorious Barossa shiraz. Despite its 17.5% alcohol level, the wine is a balanced powerhouse of fruit (but without the 'jammy' quality evident in so many young Aussie shirazes) and gripping (in the loveliest sense) tannins. Other favorites were: 1993, 2004, 1990, 2001, 1991, 1996 and 1998. Among the ones I found of less interest were: 1994, 2000, 2003 and 2006.

  • Either I just don't get it or the emperor has no clothes. Tasted both the 2001 and 2002 at a store tasting. The bottles had just come from a tasting done by RP, and Chris Ringland himself was there with them. Even though there was general agreement that at 7 and 6 years old these bottles were still not ready to drink, I didn't get any hints that they would ever be ready to drink. I didn't visible spit up when told that they would retail at ca. US$500/bottle. If these were presented to me at a blind tasting and I had been told they were $20/bottle, neither would have found there way to my cart. The 2001 was astringent; the 2002 went down a bit easier. They had great color, but only moderate body. Good complexity and long finish, but since the flavors weren't a pleasure, didn't need them to last long.
On the chance that even after 35 years of drinking wine from all of the world, there is just something odd about my taste buds, and since there are no other published numerical scores with which to average mine, I wont put a number in the box. If I were to: 82 on the 2001 and 84 on the 2002.
