Tasted a vertical of Big River 2000, 2001, 2002. The '02 was very different from the previous two vintages with a tannic structure and much darker fruit characteristics, both on the nose and in the mouth. Medium-to-full bodied, tannic coated dark raspberry, dark cherry, hint of strawberry fruit with an average finish. An enjoyable "bigger" zin, but should soften with another year or two in the bottle.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Deep, dark color. Medium to full-bodied. Lots of blackberry and other dark fruits. Enough vanilla to keep my wife happy but not too much that it became a distraction for me. Some fine-grained tannins and decent acidity. Didn't seem all that hot for 15.2% alcohol. Paired well with grilled shrimp.

On day 1, I thought this was an off bottle. It wasn't giving up much fruit or flavor. On day 2, it was back to life with rich dark fruit, spice and a sweet finish. The score would have been higher if this all appeared on day 1. Do zins shut down?
