Rich and tasty. Notes of chocolate and black pepper on the nose. Blackberry and blueberry in the mouth. Tannins have smoothed out but still provide a nice backbone.

I had a bottle of this a few years ago and I was impressed. Since then, I had forgotten about this bottle until I was scrambling for a big Zin when the in-laws were over for Christmas. While this is certainly big, it stops short of “yuge.” Deep red fruit with mocha, herbs, and verve. While front and center, the blackberry jam fruit is not dominant. There is also spice, tartness, and just a touch of forest floor. Really nice. 92.

I usually avoid big Zin, particularly from the “Three Rs” (Ravenswood, Rosenblum, and Ridge) since they are usually overblown, fruit bomb, hot messes (well, except Ridge, but I digress). When I saw these Ravenswood Sins, though, I jumped. Quickly. Nice fruit (albeit a touch stewed), anise, chocolate, and oomph were all present on the nose. On the palate, much the same, but added texture and depth. On the big side? Yes. On the “yummy” side?

Typically good Ravenswood Zin. Big with bold fruit, nicely balanced, medium-long finish.
