Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Still a very deep colour, but only the slightly dull hue of the purple core hints at anything like age. Nothing like 27 years age though and there's only the faintest hint of mahogony at the rim.

Dark fruits on the nose, not big yet persistent. Also some black oilve and a hint of tobacco & bacon. Overall the nose comes across as quite savoury, despite the persistent fruit.

The palate is medium bodied, but more significantly there's still a backbone of tannins giving it structure - and almost a hint of menace. Again dark fruits and black olive flavours are to the fore and any sweetness of the fruit is kept firmly in line by the tannins. Acidity supports nicely, but unlike the tannins, doesn't challenge the foreground.

Overall a nicely eccentric wine, that having gambled on very firm tannins, is still going strong today and might even make another decade or more, though I doubt the tannins will EVER truly fade away. I appreciate the point of difference this wine offers.
