  • Our last bottle of this.
Still dark and surprisingly youthful purple-claret in colour with no hint of age showing at the rim. Blind this would look like a 3-5 year old wine.

Initially a nice balance of fruit and leather, though the leather has now faded into the background and bright, vibrant and slightly leafy fruit holds sway. Swirling shows a little more richness and also releases a little leather.

Again quite classical on the palate and the acidity is nicely refreshing without stepping out of line. Good length but not especially complex. Some tannins remain, but they also don't stand out.

Overall a very nice classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon, that somewhat surprisingly might still have a decade more to improve.

  • Much more youthful looking tjhan 23 years of age would suggest, with almost no bricking at the rim.

On the nose it gives away a little age, with some savoury / dried fruit elements joining the black fruits along with a little of what comes across like nettle. Swirling releases a significantly more rich fruit profile.

The palate shows more red fruit than black fruit, with nice bright acidity and stealthy tannins. Relatively lean (in a good way) and a little less complex than the nose suggested.

  • Some age showing at the rim, but less than you'd expect @ 22 years old, with still good depth to the colour.

Attractive nose, with blackcurrant dominant, but some background strawberry, black cherry and a whisper of green pepper add complexity.

nicely restrained, but persistent and reasonably complex palate, the fruit still in fine shape and a little pencil shaving coming through in addition to the profile on the nose. Acidity is a little high without food, but should be fine with food. Tannins? Yes there are some residual tannins joining with the acidity on the finish to give grip without drying up that finish.

I like the style of these wines.

  • Good depth to the colour and pretty youthful in appearance for a 22 yr old wine.

Atrractive nose with plum & blackcurrant-led fruit, mocha, tobacco and a hint of mint & green pepper. Swirling seems to release sweeter fruit flavour.

On the medium-bodied palate it's nicely balanced and despite some drying tannins on the finish, with food (braised lamb), they're no issue. Good fruit complexity and the bright acidity carries through a finish of good length (though post-meal those tannins come more to the fore, giving a little too much grip).

With the right food, I think this is a very good wine, but those tannins do demand some red meat to bring out the best in the wine. Must have been a real beast in it's youth!
