  • Good level, though the cork came out without much resistance. No problems thankfully as a result, because the wine has a bright medium yellow colour. Initially floral nose gives way to ripening pineapple and the palate is much better after an hour or so, revealing some pungent yellowish citrus, but also a raspy finish. Between very good & very good plus.

  • A bottle over two days. Old leak and a level 2cm below cork. Lightish yellow. Slightly pungent pale yellow fruit nose, which on the 2nd day showed enough acacia for me to find a similarity to the Jacob's Creek Steingarten Riesling 2003 from the Barossa. Perhaps the hot and extremely dry Latvian summer, combined with the never-before- experienced sight of parched, brown lawns caused my sub-conscious to detect an Australian feature in the glass when, obviously, it wouldn't be there. The mouth was proper Rheingau, though, and while it generally followed the layout of the previous bottle noted last year, it seemed more primary and reserved. Also less concentrated than expected. Between very good and very good plus, with plenty of time in hand.

  • Two bottles over three days. The first had a light golden colour with a worrying amber tinge, with faded pineapple and distant roasted nuts on the nose. Even before it had reached my mouth, it was clearly more old than middle-aged, contrary to my expectation - based on significant experience with Breuer's two village bottlings. The palate confirmed that most of the fruit was gone and, although there was possibly some improvement towards the end, it was, in a nutshell, an overly tired and acidic drink.

As I have some cases of this, I was alarmed enough to open another bottle the next day. The act of pouring wine is generally an occasion for joy, but here it gave particular pleasure, since I could immediately tell that it looked much younger - a medium yellow colour. The nose began in a similarly youthful way, with a sheen of minerals and lemony fruit, though the familiar pungent and ripe yellow fruit, ripening pineapple and grilled nuts appropriate to its middle-age soon became the dominant theme. The same medium body, but with both a backbone and a fully functional central nervous system which the first bottle lacked. Sweet fruit middle palate and a vigorous, mouthwatering lemon-acid finish. Very impressive concentration, which on the next day seemed greater still. This very good plus second bottle is exactly how the wine should be. It should last at least two decades.

I put the first bottle's condition down to the cork, which was stiff, fractured and having a coarser surface than the cork from the second, which was elastic and had a silky-smooth surface. While the Breuer village wines are normally highly dependable, I'm still glad that they moved to a screwcap closure for this line as well.

  • Quicknote
    A clear light yellow.
Getting a hint of petrolium on the nose, and it feels really crisp and dry.
    A really vibrant wine
