  Rare Cote-Rotie Dinner ('91, '88, '83) (Blue Hill (NYC)): This has some horse shit and wild animal on the nose along with a curious spritz. Hay. Expressive though. The palate is lively and has bright red fruit up front plus a strong mid palate and flavors that carry through a nice finish.

  What a beautiful wine this was. The nose is so expressive as it glides through various stages but underpinned by a smoke, roasted meats and braised plums. However, this description wouldn't complete the picture as it nuanced throughout the evening. The palate was so savory, with the roasted meats meeting some baked fruits with cloves and a fantastic lifted acidic finish which was lent the wine, although nearly 30 years old, a flourish. I have 1 left and it will be difficult to find the appropriate moment to let her sing!

  It is a long time since I last had an 83 Cote Rotie. Back in the day they were robust but quite tannic. This wine from Champet, along with the Jasmin 83 were the first wines I had which made me appreciate the qualities of Cote Rotie back in the mid 90s. Now fully mature, tannins fully resolved and even better than I remember it from 15 years ago. It has everything one wants from Cote Rotie, nose has smoke, bacon fat, game, pan scrapings, and a hint of juicy blackcurrant fruit. Flavour soft, mellow, gamey, more bacon, rich fruit with plenty of forest floor, meat juices. Rich yet mellow. Fully resolved. Magnificent wine. Drink now to appreciate the qualities of mature Cote Rotie. Best after 2 hours in the decanter.
