Very bitter on opening, it needs a lot of air. After sitting in the bottle and glass for a couple hours it is much more put together but still quite strong: nose is ripe and rich and spicy, almost like a good rye. There’s definitely a decent amount of alcohol here but it’s not harsh. Palate is still a bit tight with stone, licorice, bitter root and concentrated plum notes. Tons of tannins, not a ton of acidity so it’s kind of out of balance. I’ll leave the bottle in the fridge and check on it tomorrow; hopefully it will even out by then.
Update: after a night in the fridge it is smelling amazing: totally ripe and rich southern Rhône with crushed stone, cherries, dark plums, some rosemary. The palate has more of the same but the “crushed stone” is more like crushed aspirin, just too bitter (maybe tannic?) to really be enjoyable. Hard to say what this needs; more time? Less time? Who knows.

Online Blind Tasting #9: Broadening your wine horizon: *** Note is based on 0,1l bottles filled about 2 days before the tasting from 0,75l bottle and 0,1l two days after the tasting *** Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah / Zalto Universal Clear, deep garnet color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Warm, olive tapenade, herbs, spices, red and dark fruit. Deep and dense. Dry, medium+ acidity, 14% abv, high, velvet tannin, medium+ body. Warm red fruit, probably a bit cooked, black olive tapenade, spicy, amarena cherries.Silky, velvet texture, round, good grip, extract. Long, hot finish. Probably at its full peak. Will not get any better, but won’t decline soon. Wonderful, special wine, not for everyone. Unfortunately, a bit too hot. 91

Opened (not decanted) for about 3 hours. Nose is gravelly, slightly green with graphite and herbs. Palate is minty with cherry hard candy, blackberry, licorice, and a black pepper finish. Tannins are soft but strong. Paired very well with Cuban roast pork.
Update: after two nights in the fridge it’s still in good shape; similar notes to the above. Seems like this has plenty of time left.

Blind, slight brick rim, dark ruby center, rubber, menthol, black olives, berries, earthy, rich ripe and very lengthy finish. Very well made. In its drinking window where it should hold another decade.

Very interesting to see this again - this is still very much alive. Loads opf rich, primary fruit, a powerfull preference, tannins has disolved and iof not exactly elegant, certainly a softer wine, than it used to be. Will live in, but seems a point. Impressive for Rasteau #nytårskur
