  • Medium-deep and somewhat developed, burnished golden yellow color. Incredibly rich, concentrated and almost dessert wine-like nose with open and rather powerful aromas of beeswax, honey, sweet perfumed flowers, some apple jam, a little bit of overripe pear, light honeydew melon tones and a hint of sweet, exotic spice. If served blind, I would've thought this was a vendages tardives wine. Contrasting the unctuous nose, the wine is noticeably leaner and brighter on the palate with medium-to-moderately full body, rather oily mouthfeel and concentrated, dry-to-off-dry flavors of poached pears, overripe red apples, some honeydew melon, a little bit of exotic spice, light mineral bitterness, a hint of juicy apricots and a touch of developed nuttiness. With some air, a light undercurrent of wildhoney and white flowers emerge. The wine is remarkably fresh and bright for its concentration, thanks to the rather high acidity and quite pronounced stony minerality. The finish is dry, fresh and quite dominated by intense mineral notes of wet stones and chalky bitterness. There are persistent, layered flavors of pear marmalade, peach, some honey, a little bit of honeydew melon, light floral tones, hints of roasted chestnuts and walnuts and a touch of hay.

An outstanding, complex and beautifully developed Pinot Gris that isn't as fat, flabby and ponderous as the most extreme examples of Alsatian PG can be - probably the age has stripped the wine some of its baby fat, concentrating the remaining characteristics considerably. Despite the 10 years of age, the wine is still remarkably youthful in style and most likely it will not only keep, but also develop further for many more years. Outstanding value at 29,90€. Highly recommended.

  • A typical Alsatian Pinot Gris nose of spices, autumn mushrooms, and some yellow fruits on the background. Quite broad actually, for such a dry wine, as this is fermented practically dry - just a couple of grams residual sugar. Rich on the palate too, with a hint of bitterness. A bit clumsy maybe, but still quite well structured for an Alsatian PG.
