I love this wine. I wish I had another case of it in my cellar.
On the nose, it's raspberry, tobacco and a bit of candied apple. What sets this Zin blend apart is the racy acidity, from front to back - it's got tons of raspberry, with white pepper spice and a nice flourish towards the end. Surprisingly, it's food-friendly and a great sipper on its own. Lighter in style than its Zin/Syrah components would lead you to believe. A real under-the-radar gem.

While this Zinfandel blend is only 62% Zin, that's what stands out in this wine. There's a wonderful spicy pepper component that is nicely restrained, lasting through mid-palate but not overshadowing the fruit. The Syrah component is not overpowering, it is surprisingly hard to pick out what it contributes. The winemaker nailed the blending on this vintage, much more so than in the 2008.

Novoino's 4th annual portfolio tasting (Park Hyatt Hotel, Chicago IL): nose: very spicy nose with black spices, peppery tones, black fruits and black cherries
taste: full bodied and extremely rich tones that are a bit overblown with tones of black spices, black fruits and black cherries
overall: a pretty standard zin. This is in the over the top category though it isn't overblown
