Community Tasting Notes (8) Median Score: 89 points

  • Deep red colour with some brick at the edge. Nose with overripe red berries, some dried red berries, glühwein spices and some pepper, eucalyptus, vanilla and a bit of flowery notes. Rather full-bodied and smooth palate with seriously sweet and slightly stewed fruit, including red berries, plums and some blackberries, good acidity, very fine crystalline minerality, soft tannins, some alcoholic feeling (but definitely within bounds for this style of wine) and an aftertaste with sweet berries and vanilla. Fully mature and smooth. 91 p.

There is definitely typical (powerful/old-fashioned) Aussie Shiraz character here, but it also reminds me more than a little of a "Power-Grenache" which also means that you could imagine a percentage of mature Port being included in the blend. :-) To me, it's mature rather than old.

While I can understand those that feel that this type of wine in general is a bit "too much" and sometimes performs better while young, the extremely low scores given by some earlier CT reviewers are completely incomprehensible to me (despite being a big fan of classical Burgundies...), based on my experience from this bottle, and one earlier a few years ago. The unexpectedly fine minerality in this wine was a winning point for me. This bottle was actually slightly better than I remember the previous one being, so this wine it probably sitting where it is rather than declining.

  • Thunder from Down Under: Bad. Probably would have been better when it was still young enough to have some up-front sweet fruit, since all you taste now is wincing pain.

  • Aussie classics (Keith's, NYC): Essence of dried out American oak. Brutal and offensive, but hilarious in the circumstances.

  • From a Mag. Nice old school style Barossa Shiraz. Lots of American oak. Still some spicey fruit holding on. Not much mid palate.
