  • Lunch with Helen, Lorenzo and friends: I'm not really a Rossignol fan and this wine didn't make me one (on the reveal). Spicy, dark cherries, blackberries and other dark fruit on the bouquet. Also, in the mouth, plenty of dense, dark berries, iodine and earth. A little herbaceous. (I thought I detected whole bunch character however the wine was apparently 100% destemmed). Silky and smooth, seeming quite worked. In some ways more New World inspired than Burgundian. You either like this style or you don't. Ready to go now but no hurry needed.

  • Nose: Dark cherries, strawberries in a vat. typical burgundy

Attack: sour cherries, oak and acid not very impressive

Midpalete: More strawberries, more then medium body. Silky tannins but sourness spikes

Finish: Sour and pretty long. oak as well. Not very interesting.

  • Judgment of Six Fours, France vs. Spain. Blind tasting. Twelve tasters. Light hue, pinot like. It shows a strong acidity with an exuberant red fruits. Tannins impolite, lacking nobility an depth. Not a pleasure after the Spain blockbusters. Everybody agreed. 13.3/20

  • Blind tasted. Red fruit & poppies on the nose - I guessed a Morgon. Crunchy red fruits on the palate but lacks depth. Enjoyable but don't wait any longer, there is no evident structure to age.

  • Birthday dinner at Ma Cuisine in Beaune. Along with our terrific meal, we had a bottle of this lovely, elegant Volnay. While this note is written months later, I remember well the purity and elegance of this wine. After dinner E ordered a Chartreuse Tarragona, Période 1979-1984, which was simply mind blowing -- depth and complexity which I would have thought impossible, and an unending finish; I ordered a 1973 Laberdolive Armagnac which, while not quite reaching the heights of the Chartreuse, was nonetheless phenomenal in its own right. A great evening.
