The 1989 Vigna Rionda or 'Sorì Vigna Riunda' (nota bene "non riserva") is quite a rarity as Franco told me, just a smaller amount was bottled as "non riserva". What a wine. Brilliant young color and juice. The trademark 1989 inner sweetness and myriads of Rionda layers were shining at their best. A totally mesmerizing wine that I will remember forever.

The '89 Rionda is a fantastic wine and still showed youthful today, with vibrant color and plenty of energy. On the nose, I found dark red to black cherry fruit, earth / black truffle, menthol, and balsamic spices. On the palate, the wine was richly textured with above average acidity, with some fine grained tannin remaining at the back end. The wine showed a beautiful inner sweetness, with black cherry fruit, earth, and balsamic spices, ending with sweet, hard-candy like dark fruit, balsamic, and roast meat flavors on the long finish.
Darker fruited, with great spice, roses, balsam notes, and Serralunga perfume. Rich and broad. this is an unctuous ripe, richly textured and layered Barolo that comes right at you with palate impact and depth, yet retains balance and poise. Youthfully powerful.

It is 29 years old - and it is still young. We were impressed. It is dark - the nose is black cherries and some hint of dark pepper. What impressed us the most is how much the nose is giving - it tasted blind none of us would have been close to guess 1989. The palette is very balanced and everything is perfectly integrated - still medium acidity and tannins. The fruit is black cherries but actually a bit less mature than on the palette. We are on very well deserved big 95.

Gala Dinner at La Festa del Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): [Brought by Franco Massolino. Decanted around 6pm.] Dark smoky black fruit in the nose and mouth. Rich, tannic, still young and tight. Needs time or a longer decant. I think it was only open for an hour or two. 94-96, perhaps more when it finally reaches its peak.
