I"m going to skip rating this, as it oxidized pretty quickly after pouring. The first few sips were very good, but then it turned. It had been stored in my wine cellar since purchasing it direct from the winery upon release. But sometimes when a bottle gets to a certain age, "there are no good wines, just good bottles." I'm sure some 1997s of this are fine, this one wasn't.

From an immaculate bottle and cork, with perfect color with almost no bricking, this is fantastic stuff and every bit as good as its reputation. Red fruit, medium bodied, lovely and fresh, still has big tannin despite throwing a ton of sediment over the 26 years; classic asphalt PS nose but also roses; reminds me of the very best bottles of Pato Baga I’ve ever had but also a 1974 Napa PS at Berns years ago. Wonderful wine.

Purchased on release and perfectly cellared ever since. The cork split upon extraction, but the wine was fine. Deep red with some lightening (not browning) on the edges. Bursting with black fruits, smoke, tar and pepper. Mature, but still lively with the tannins very well resolved; not a hard edge to be found. No overt signs of alcohol... I saw the label stated a very reasonable 13.7%. A wonderful drinking experience.

Still just a baby with a lot of tannin to still resolve. I'm not sure the fruit would be able to outlast the tannins here . . .

Still young. Beautiful. Needs time to lose the alcohol. Fruit is georgeous.
