  • This is a knockout.

Deep amber colour flecked with gold. The nose is like a Christmas cake in preparation with waves of dried fruit, spices, treacle, marzipan, and cognac. After almost 50 years, it is on the dry side of off-dry, full-bodied, and it dances around the mouth. At one minute stewed apricots, the next candied orange rind.

  • Superb wines with a superb dinner- Trimbach, Chave, L'Angelus, Montrose, ZH & more. (Applewood): Somehow I’d never heard of this producer before, but a quick search on the Internet found their website. Apparently, their estate dates back to 748 a.d. and they claim to have first planted Riesling in 1720, thus apparently making it the oldest Riesling vineyard in the world. In any case, the wine was quite a surprise as while showing it’s age, the wine was still intact and offered both pleasure and intellectual curiosity. Light amber-colored with a complex nose of dry honey, nuts, baked spiced apples and dried apricots. Aged on the palate, but the wine is unbowed and sports a nice acidic spine. Like flavors as aromas, with perhaps more of a dried apricot note on the palate. There’s still sweetness left on the palate, but shows it as an old Riesling does. Time to drink up, but we all thought the wine might have deceptive staying power. It worked extremely well with the lobster as the nuttiness of the wine melded together perfectly with the chestnuts in the dish. A-/B+.

  • Sourced direct from the Domaine, wrapped in cellophane, with barely perceptible ullage. Unbleached cork. Deep golden color. Penetrating nose of toasted pine nuts and petrol, sappy honey lemon, pear/apricot background. Taste of sweet, sappy citrus and pear, petrol, with superb balance. Mouth coating, persistent minerality, driving a layered, complex very long finish, which ends with fine, largely resolved tannins. No change the next day, not even any noticeable oxidation. Since there are some unresolved tannins, great balance, vibrant fruit, and little change after being open for one day, I'm wondering if this wine will continue to improve - Is this possible? Overall: A great experience, a bottle that rendered great pleasure and was a great learning experience
