  • Two nights at the Mecca (Night One) ("If you don't know...you better ask somebody"): This was a very nice example of an aged Burgundy...but to be honest it couldn't hold up against the older bottles that came before it. Nice notes of red fruits that are somewhat simple and linear...yet still offer some elegance. Well worth the cost off the list (you know the place)...but it just couldn't stand up to the Burgs from the 50's & 60's.

  • One of the better Burgundies I have had from my birth year. This smelt wonderful, just how you would imagine an aged Chambolle to smell: ferrous mineral, subtle floral notes, cherries and red berries, perfumed plums, a little earth, some savoury meat - a beautifully complex and layered bouquet. Thankfully, the palate did not disappoint after that. It was not perfect, lacking some of the fulness of a better vintage, but there was certainly no lack of substance here. In fact, it was one of the most complete 1980s I have had, starting from a rather fleshy attack with plums and preserved berries and haw flakes, and then moving into a nicely layered and complex midpalate, where the fruit took on a sour cherry note hovering above a nice earthiness and a little spice. The tannins had softened into a velveteen texture, but the wine was still very fresh, still lively, leading into a good little finish that showed a touch of undergrowth and some wilted floral perfume right at the end. A very pleasurable wine, probably coming towards the end of its drinking window.

  • Bern's Bottle - Ruby red with classic burnished brown accents. Initially a very earthy nose with almost Brett like elements that blew off after an hour in the decanter...bright red fruit and integrated forrest floor nose. Bright red fruit on the palate, exhibiting red cherry and red plum. There is an interesting anise component to the palate that integrates well and finishes with a dried mushroom note. Shockingly good, drink up!
