(BARBARESCO Cantina del Pino) Piedmont Dear Friends, We had such an enthusiastic response to Cantina del Pino's 2005 Ovello offer (750ml) that we found a parcel of the winery's 2006 Barbaresco (Vacca's only cuvee with Starderi fruit - rumored to be a Starderi labeled Barbaresco in 2009 when he has more fruit to work with - for a much higher price of course). If you are looking for exemplary quality and value for the genre, this wine has remained an insider's example with a more traditional presence than both the Ovello and Albesani. The "Barbaresco" is not considered a lesser wine than the two single vineyard cuvees, rather it is the winery's chance to showcase each vintage as a unique growing season by blending what they feel best reflects the year - the addition of Starderi fruit also keeps it unique from the other two wines. Kudos to Renato Vacca for keeping the price at the lowest end of the totem pole for Barbaresco (despite very high quality that is better than many of the more expensive wines from his famous neighbors). Sour cherry, coffee, spices, pleasant nose but with a ripe, bruised even oxidative pallor to the fruit that casts a pruny element over the nose. Palate has enough tannin that it's hard for me to enjoy this right now, bitter and raw rhubarb-like. Kind of severe and not much charm, though plenty of Nebbiolo character here. Heavy flaky sediment in the last glass, need to decant the next bottle.

Slow ox'd for 10 hours, and also saved 1/3 bottle for day 2. Pretty rough and tannic on first opening, and a tough drink. Fairly fruit forward, more cherries and roses than tar. After 10 hours the wife still finds this too tannic, although it has softened a bit. After 34 hours this has achieved a nice balance, with still evident but softer tannins, less fruit, and pretty tasty overall. There is a small amount of sediment at the bottom.

Decanted for a hour - not enough; slow opening; tight with alcohol overtone; eventually opened with modest fruit of raspberry and earthiness; finish improved with time.

Totally impenetrable on Day 1. It has opened up significantly on Day 2. Soft, well-integrated nose of dried beef, smoke, sour cherry and light baking spice. No sharp edges. The palate is slightly less complex with cranberries and dark cherries. It's soft and smooth on entry, but the structure really kicks in on the mid-palate with tannins drying out the tongue. I'll try to pick up another bottle to see where this one ends up. 87 on Day 1, 91 with upside on Day 2.
